Travel Adapters (aka Voltage Converters) work great for non-transformer
powered devices. Unfortunately, they do not work great for devices which include
transformers. This is due to the fact that our transformers are designed around
a purely sinusoidal AC voltage. Many of these voltage/frequency conversion devices
generate a square wave output which contains many odd-order harmonics. As a result
this causes our transformers to be subjected to frequencies other than what they
are designed to handle. The magnetic core goes into saturation, the transformer
overheats, and the protective safety devices open resulting in a dead part. |
